American Idol top 5

It was a pretty sweet selection this week in my opinion. The contestants chose songs from the Rat Pack era. I was lovin' it...soo stinkin' much better than disco night for sure!! :) Here we go...

Kris Allen ~ The Way You Look Tonight - I heart this song. I do. Ever seen the movie Father of the Bride? *sigh* One of my all time favs! Ok. I adored Kris' rendition of this song! I loved the tempo change up midpoint, the nice jazzy feel to it. Classy. Perfect vocals. Wow! But why in the world is the guy walking around with the mic stand??

Alison Iraheta ~ Someone to Watch Over Me - Much much better in the dress selection tonite. She looked beautiful and btw: a very Happy 17th Birthday to her! Oh, to be young again. Ahem. Wow, in my very humble opinion this performance was her all time BEST of the season. The smokey vocals were dead on, no screaming...just pure. I really liked the slowed down version of this song. She really made it contemporary and enjoyable! Nice.

Matt Giraud ~ My Funny Valentine - Ugh. I totally hate this song. Ugh. Ugh. Ok, why does it remind me of Constantine, season something or 'nother? Didn't he sing this song. I think that's why it gives me the creeps. Sheesh. This sounded weird to me tonite. Like he was off key or off beat or just off. Not good. I think he's gone this week. Wait....I'm late. I watched the results. Yeah, he IS gone. Good run, Matt!

Danny my boy Gokey ~ Come Rain or Come Shine - Seriously, I'm totally downloading this song....and getting my SIGNED picture!!!!! :D Uh, sah-lammin suit y'all. What up?! He has never looked better, wow! Off the hook vocals, gave me the shivers and a big ol smile up on my face. He was smooth and looked like a pro up there. Star performance. I would have voted a million times for him but I wasn't home. Shoo, he's safe. SWEET.

Adam Lambert ~ Feeling Good - I love this song, esp the way Michael Buble sings it. Why is Adam always last? Hmm. Seems a little slanted. The boy sure knows how to make an entrance. Anyways, I typically like his performances but I just wasn't crazy about this one. It seemed super indulgent and there's no way I would even download this one. Eh. I bet it gave him a good helping of humble pie to be in the BOTTOM TWO! ;)

American Idol top 7 again

It was Disco night y'all and I was sitting back waiting to be transported to the days of bell bottoms, long hair and lots o'groovin...I was a tad bit disappointed with some of the performances but the others were EX.CELL.ENT. Here we go...

Lil Rounds - “I’m Every Woman” - Oh dear. I'm not really sure what more unique critiques I can make on this girl. Um, the unitard is so out!! Please and Thank You. It was a kinda sorta fun performance I guess. It's just time for her to depart. I'm sorry.

Kris Allen - “She Works Hard For The Money” - Can I get a holla?!!! What Is Up...this was HOTNESS tonite up in heyah y'all. I loved loved the island jazzy groove sound of this song! Wow, this was supremely original and all KRIS. Niiiice. It vaguely reminded me of another fav who performed every song with his own incredible spin on it. D.C. anyone?! :) VOTED.

Danny Gokey - “September” - All I can say is EN.ER.GY. people!! Danny was popping off that stage...I thoroughly enjoy whatever this guy belts out. I seriously get a big goofy grin on my face from start to finish. I loved it, the boy can sang. I'm just sayin. VOTED.

Allison Iraheta - “Hot Stuff” - Ok, WHAT is UP with the black unitards tonite??!! Good grief, we said DISCO not the 80's!!!!!!!!! That outfit was hideous, come on you know it's true. Yikes girl. I was not really a big fan of this performance. I typically love Allison but tonite didn't thrill me for some reason. It seemed kinda screamy but the judges loved it so maybe it's just me? Nah. ;)

Adam Lambert - “If I Can’t Have You” - OhMyWord. First of all, sick suit dude...you will whip that out again if you're smart. Wow, this performance gave me chills....chills! It was ridiculous and intense and he def connected with this one...I could feel the flippin heat through the tv for pity sake. HOTHOTHOT.

**Quote O'the Night by Ryan Seacrest: "A Pool of Abdul". Priceless.**

Matt Giraud - “Stayin’ Alive” - Aww, the guy who got saved. I'm glad he got saved and I'm not ashamed to say it. He def deserves to be there longer than Lil for sure. I really like the way he changed up the arrangement on this song...the cool jazz vibe. It wasn't incredible but it was good and I enjoyed it. So there.

Anoop Desai - “Dim All The Lights” - I really really really disliked the weird arrangement of this song. The weird techno beat with the slow tempo music.....what??!!! Again, I cannot watch this guy perform. While he sounded really great tonite, I just....I just. Ug. Lose the mustache buddy. I'm sorry.

Ok, who should go?? Let's all say this together....LIL. Lil. Lil.....it's time.

BEST of the night? Hmm....goes to Kris and Adam......but I've got mad love for Danny as always.

A Book Review

I recently had the privilege to review the children's book, Dudley's Solo by Tiffany Alexander. This is a delightful tale about a boy named Dudley, who is uniquely different from other kids. Children who read Dudley's story will see that everyone is special in their own way...whether they have brown hair or wear glasses or use their hands to talk. Dudley's Solo is an encouraging read about friendship, acceptance and confidence for children of all ages!

**Children's Author Tiffany Alexander say, "Growing up visually impaired had a tremendous impact on my life," who was legally blind until middle school. "I could do what most of the kids could do, but I always had limitations. As hard as it was to be different, I gained inner-strength and the desire to persevere no matter what."

The first book in the Children's Band series, "Dudley's Solo" takes place at a neighborhood church where the children's band excitedly rehearses for their upcoming choir concert, including Dudley, a hearing-impaired little boy. But being deaf doesn't prevent him from participating in the concert. Encouraged by his friends and father, Dudley embraces his disability and becomes the star of the show by signing the words to "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands" to the entire congregation.

"Children's band was instrumental in my spiritual and social growth. Like Dudley, this is where I received my earliest encouragement," Alexander says. "The other kids and I learned the importance of volunteering, being a good citizen, and mostly importantly, I learned that I could do anything if I put my mind to it."

Tiffany Alexander resides in Atlanta, Ga., and works as an editor for CNN. She is a member of the Independent Books Publishers Association, The National Association of Black Journalists, Hampton University Alumni Association and the African-American Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. She is currently working on the next book in the Children's Band series called "Ebenezer Opens a Savings Account."

A Book Review

Anyone who knows me gets early on that I'm a book lover and a huge Karen Kingsbury fan! This is Karen's newest novel out and halleluiah for the library I say because my budget would never allow me to purchase all these wonderful books. :)

I just finished reading Take One, the first in the Above the Line series and shockingly enough, I loved it. One thing about KK's books is that they are seamless and fluid, you don't even realize that you've blinked and read 5 chapters.

Take One is the story of 2 friends who follow the call of God from the overseas mission field to the mission field of Hollywood film producing. Intriguing right? I was carried along with the characters as they stepped out by faith, struggled with fear and compromise, overcame adversity, discovered true friendship and were drawn closer to God through it all. This book is so culturally relevant for today, beckoning us to question the kind of stand we might take if called upon to give an account to the hope that lines within us. In a day and age when 'anything goes', this book and its story is set apart as different and compelling. And hopefully it will encourage the readers in their daily lives.

I was thrilled when I heard that this new series would include characters from her Redemption series which btw was my all time fav series ever. I loved catching up on the 'Baxter family' and 'Baily and Cody' too! If you haven't yet read that series then for goodness sake START there and be drawn into the lives of these wonderfully rich and moving characters. It is a MUST READ! :)

American Idol top 7

The Top 7 contestants were able to take their pick from the Best Songs of the Cinema with the help of the guest mentor, Quentin Tarantino. There were some of my fav songs represented and some songs I was just like huh?? It was a bit strange and slightly disappointing to have the new 2 judge team giving their critiques tonite. I hope this won't be the norm from here on out. Hmm...

Allison Iraheta - I Don't Want to Miss a Thing ~ LOVE.LOVE.LOVE. this song, always have...always will. Ahem. Ok, so she looked great tonite and she sounded even better! I believed this performance completely and it was much more her 16 yr old level than last week. The rugged vocals were off the hook! Nice girl.

Anoop Desai - Every I Do I Do it for You ~ I totally adore this song too!! Ok, I cannot get over the schoolboy outfit he had on tonite. Oi. But sweet sweet vocals, I loved the velvet sound of his performance. One of his best.

Adam Lambert - Born to be Wild ~ Were those patent leather chucks he had on?? And where can I get me some of them...in red. So I see he's back to the makeup bit...he can leave that alone in my opinion. BUT this performance was like a flipping rock concert! HOLYMOLY people. While this wasn't one of my fav of his performances, it was still off the hook. He has long since left the league of amateurs my friends.

Matt Giraud - Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman ~ He looked great tonite, props to whoever finally fixed that boy's hair! Slick. There were some wicked sweet parts and some wicked parts of this performance tonite. It was overall disappointing because I love this guy and his incredible potential. Still a fan.

Danny Gokey - Endless Love ~ ILOVETHISGUY. Interesting without the matching glasses tonite. Wow! HOLYHARP. Slammin' outfit. Ok, enough already. There were tears in my eyes by the time he finished. Simple, pure and touching performance. Classic. VOTED. like mad.

Kris Allen - Falling Slowly ~ Never heard of this song in my life. But whatev. It was tender and sizzlin'....brilliant baby. Every week he raises the bar for himself. Well done.

Lil Rounds - The Rose ~ I donotnotnot like this song. But she looked really nice, wish I could wear my hair tenmillion different ways like she can. I really actually liked the beginning R & B part of the song but hated the Gospel ending. I'm just not sure what the deal is here. Sorry.

Ok, by far the best of the night...Danny and Adam.

Who should go?? Um, I gotta say Lil. Again.

Let me know what you're thinking!! :)

A Book Review

My first finished book of the Spring Reading Thing 2009! In Search of Eden was a book I picked up in the Christian bookstore and had never read it. The story line on the back cover immediately intrigued me which is why I added it to my list this Spring.

Wow, I highly recommend that you add this to your reading list! I've never read any of Linda Nichols books...but that will no longer be the case. I adore her writing style...her words in black and white weave the most vivid descriptive pictures in your mind that I truly felt like I was living in the story! I laughed and cried...I even talked out loud with this incredible story. I could hardly wait to finish this wonderful tale of heartache and healing, loss and receiving, bitterness and forgiveness. In Search of Eden will draw the reader in and captivate them from start to finish. It is unique in it's story line and perfect in it's development of character and it's conclusion. A must read...a 10 in my opinion! :)

Heard of Shmoop?

Wow, I'm not really even sure how to describe this website...other than WOW! 5 Minutes for Giveaways is hosting a giveaway and did an intro for Shmoop. American Idol top 8

The American Idol top 8 sang songs from the year they were born tonite. I personally loved that they were mostly from the 80's...holla. However, the fact that they are all that much younger than me...ouch! Anyways, here we go...

Danny Gokey from 1980 ~ "Stand By Me". Ok, he had a slammin' outfit on tonite...the boy can wear PINK and still look good! Very cool rendition of the song, I loved the slow beginning leading into the uptempo ending. The performance had a niiiice Danny-flava!! I love the way this guy looks around like he is just tickled pink just to be there. :) VOTED.

Kris Allen from 1985 ~ "All She Wants To Do Is Dance". Hmm, this wasn't a super great song choice for him tonite. It was fun and upbeat but a tad boring and I really like this guy. The song is very repetative and doesn't lend itself to really showcasing his megatalentedpipes. He's so much better than tonite's performance.

Lil Rounds from 1984 ~ "What's Love Got To Do With It". I definitely loved the hair tonite...and those shoes, hot.hot.hot. Ok, so seriously...Lil's in trouble. Though I liked the little variances she put in there of her own, overall I agreed with the judges. It was pretty copycat once again. Who is she??

Anoop Desai from 1986 ~ "True Colors". This was a good song choice for him but I'm just not feelin' it. I do not see him as a R & B artist at all. Sorry. I don't think he will be around in the end.

Scott MacIntyre from 1985 ~ "The Search Is Over". I actually really liked this performance tonite. It was different...guitar instead of the piano and a lively song. It was a nice change up for him. Good job, shame on those harsh judges.

Allison Iraheta from 1992 ~ "I Can't Make You Love Me". She is just too cute! Although I totally loved this performance...if I had heard it on the radio, great but the fact that I knew it was a 16 yr old singing it...yikes. It made me slightly uncomfortable. Am I nuts? Something about it just didn't fit her. Anyways, awesome vocals once again from her. Well done!

Matt Giraud from 1985 ~ "Part Time Lovers". HOT BABY HOT!!!! Matt was on fia-yah tonite y'all! I loved the jazzy-bluesy feel to this song, unique to him. Awesome vocals...def his sweet spot! Wow!! VOTED.

Adam Lambert from 1982 ~ "Mad World". Never heard of this song but whatev. And OIVEY with the weird blue glow lighting...ugh. Ok, Adam finally got a clue and hopefully once and for all got rid of the nasty makeup and nail polish. thankyousomuch. I've never heard this song before but he sang it...yes he did y'all. The song might not be my cup of tea but for whatever it's worth, it was classic Adam and you just can't argue with that.

My favs for tonite were Danny and Matt...without a doubt.

Who's going home? I'm guessing Lil or Scott.

Let's talk Idol...what did y'all think?? :)

Chloe update

I thought it was about time I wrote about what was going on with our Chloe-girl. It's been a very long process and honestly, kinda discouraging. Chloe had a successful surgery Dec. 1 and had about 1 month for recovery. She had a new prosthetic leg made but we are still in the process of getting the fit right. At first she walked in the new leg with a limp and could only walk on the tip of the prosthetic toes. After several adjustments, we thought we had a determination as to why she was not walking smoothly. However, she just had an appt. for another adjustment and after a day of walking and limping with the new leg...she has taken it off once again and went back to her old prosthesis. We are at a loss and are so frustrated for her. It is times like these that we are once again in a position of humility, calling out to our heavenly Father who we believe is the Blessed Controller of all things and loves Chloe more than we ever could! So, I guess I'm just asking for your prayers...no, it's not a life and death situation but important nonetheless for our active and energetic little girl to be able to run and play normally. I'll keep y'all posted...thanks!

Trying on the new leg...this is the guy who has been working with Chloe for 1.5 yrs. We're so grateful for Real Life...they even do mission trips to South America and work to fit amputees down there with whatever prosthesis they need!

When Chloe has an appt...you'll find her strutting her stuff on the "walkway". This helps them get a good idea of her gait and she can watch herself in the mirror too! :)

Always gonna be Papa's girl...

How Can I Run a Tight Ship
When I'm Surrounded by Loose Cannons?

"Will the Real Superwoman Please Stand Up?"
(excerpt from How Can I Run a Tight Ship When I'm Surrounded by Loose Cannons?)

"I've always been a control freak who wanted everything to run smoothly--perfectly, actually. No bumps or surprises, just--well, a "tight ship," as they say. And somewhere along the line I got the idea that I could make that happen--if I just tried hard enough. I think it may have started when I first saw Superman on our family's black and white TV and wondered, Is there a Superwoman somewhere? When I put that question to the adults in my life, they smiled and patted me on the head and said, "I don't think so, dear." So I decided to sign up for the job--a reasonable if somewhat naïve aspiration for a six-year-old, not so reasonable and way beyond naïve at twenty-six. Two decades after the birth of my Superwoman dream, I was still running as fast as I could and getting nowhere. My twenty-year-old dream was going down for the count, and I was nearly at the point of throwing in the towel--and then I met Jesus.

What a difference! Now I could latch on to verses like "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" and "All things should be done decently and in order"--biblical affirmations of my desire to do things right, to do things efficiently and effectively, to do things with power and authority. Finally I was invincible--in Jesus, of course. Now all I needed was a godly role model and I'd be on my way.

I began my search in earnest, reading through the Scriptures until I came to Proverbs 31. Eureka! There, at last, was the epitome of the Superwoman I'd been hoping to become since I was six years old. The perfect woman--perfect wife, perfect mother, perfect housekeeper, perfect entrepreneur--all rolled into one! Not only did her husband and children praise her, but God must have approved of her as well or He certainly wouldn't have included her as an example in the Bible. My dream was alive and well once again! At last I would be able to "get it all together," to win instead of fail, to run a tight ship, and to keep things under control. Life was good, and the future looked bright. There was only one problem. I hadn't figured on all the loose cannons rolling around the deck of my not-so-tight ship..."

About the Book:

(Homeland, CA) - For all the Christian women in the world who dread reading Proverbs 31 and wonder who on earth could ever live up to that woman - this book is for you. Between dirty diapers, complaining children, housework, husbands and a multitude of other attention-grabbing detours women face, award-winning author and speaker, Kathi Macias finds a way to encourage and biblically instruct women of all ages and phases. Women everywhere are the glue that holds their families together. Keeping everything under control challenges even the most organized household CEO. Kathi uses humor, God's Word, as well as practical insight and instruction to lovingly encourage women to grow in this progression of grace.

Readers will find How Can I Run a Tight Ship When I'm Surrounded by Loose Cannons?: Proverbs 31 Discoveries for Yielding to the Master of the Seas, filled with scriptural explanations and journaling pages to process and write their personal feelings and prayers. With sections of the book focused on each step of the learning process to guide our ships to safe harbor, readers will be happily surprised to find the funny without the fluff. Kathi's words are the "spoonful of sugar that makes the medicine go down." Her vulnerable approach facilitates the teachings of Proverbs 31, making it easier for women to swallow. The truth of the scriptures is very much alive and well throughout the pages, yet the ease and charm of the author's words entice readers to press forward and embrace the plan for God's woman today.

Blog Tour Interview:

I understand you sometimes refer to this book as "discipleship with a grin." What do you mean by that, and why did you choose a humor format for a discipleship book?

Actually, I chose a discipleship theme for a humor title. As much as I hate to admit it, the title came to me one day and I knew I had to do something with it--just too good to pass up! So the more I thought/prayed about it, the more I realized it described my life, both naturally and spiritually. I began to try to lay out my spiritual growth via humorous life stories, and found they produced a natural pattern. From there I developed the five stages of spiritual growth into five sections for the book, and I was off and running! Besides, I learned from a friend/mentor years ago that you can "shove a lot of truth down people's throat when their mouth is open laughing," so I figured, why not???

What are some of the funniest "loose cannons" stories included in your book?

One of my favorites is the story of my very first women's retreat as a brand new Christian back in the "Jesus freak" days of baptisms at the beach and praise-ins at the park. I shared a room with three ladies I had never met, one of whom ended up being my "bunk mate." She snored, she was quite a bit overweight (taking up much more than her side of the bed!), and she "leaked" because she was still weaning her youngest child. You'll have to read the story to see how that experience taught me a lot about "spiritual face plants."
Another favorite story is about the time I took my three sons (two pre-teens and one elementary school age at the time) to the community swimming pool. The older boys decided to use their younger brother as a human beach ball, and when they ignored my cries from the side of the pool to stop, I actually had the nerve to jump into the water and swim right up to them and order them to stop. Their level of humiliation at being seen in the pool with their mother was as close to social suicide as it gets. But we all survived and learned a lot in the process.

Your book is divided into five sections. Can you briefly explain what they are and what they have to do with discipleship and humor?

As I mentioned earlier, the five sections correspond with what I consider the five stages of spiritual growth: crawling (infants or "rugrats") on our knees; walking (toddlers who are still a bit shaky but exploring and learning); running (stronger, more mature believers who are beginning to make a difference in their world); flying or soaring (eagles with a solid foundation and maturity to share with others); resting (back on our knees and realizing that place of utter dependence on Him is really the best place to be after all). The discipleship correlation is, I believe, evident in these stages; the humor comes in simply because I'm one of those slow learners who needs God to "hit me upside the head" at times, and I haven't been bashful about explaining those times in the book.

What advice can you give to the young mom out there who is juggling two kids, a fulltime job outside the home, a husband, housework, pets and church?

Life happens in seasons! You CAN'T be all things to all people at all times. It simply doesn't work. And if you don't believe it, read about my many crash-and-burn episodes as I tried! The Proverbs 31 woman is a composite picture of many women from different walks and stages of life; when we get a grip on that, it releases us to enjoy the season we're in right now, even as we prepare for the next one.

How did raising your own children help prepare you for the parenting side of the proverbial woman? Any tips you'd like to share?

Relax and enjoy them! Yes, even the rugrats and teenagers, because "this too shall pass." There were times I thought I'd go bald from pulling out my own hair over the frustrations and failures of that season of my life, but now it's my grandchildren who are passing through those rugrat-to-teen stages, and hey, I still have my hair! You'll make it--and so will your kids--in spite of your frustrations and failures. And yes, I know there are too many of those to mention (or admit to). I'm the queen of mom-failures, and yet my kids never cease to bless me with words of love and praise. Do I deserve it? Probably not. But I love every minute of it!

Do you have a favorite part of the book or a favorite chapter?

Several, in fact, but one in particular: Chapter 26, "Back Home Again," contains the story of my precious father, a man who lived for 88 years denying God's existence and then finally turning to him in his last week of life. It's one of the more serious stories in the book, but even that one ends on a humorous note.

If the Proverbs 31 woman is alive today, what does she look like?

She looks like me--and you--and every woman whose heart longs to please God and to raise her children according to the Scriptures, even though she knows she's doing well just to make sure they all have their sack lunches before they leave for school in the morning. She's thin, overweight, short, tall, black, white, brown, red, yellow, and polka dot when she catches her kids' chicken pox. And she's absolutely beautiful!!!

Are there some specific lessons you hope readers will learn and apply to their lives after reading your book?

I want them to learn to relax and laugh and enjoy this voyage called "life," and to trust the Captain of our souls to take us home safely when our trip is over, rather than struggling to "man the oars" ourselves.

What makes your book different than other books similar to yours that are in circulation today?

There are countless books written for "control freak" women who want to do it all and be it all--perfectly and completely at all times. This one, however, is not only written with a humorous tone, but it also takes the reader through what I call the five steps of spiritual growth: crawling, walking, running, flying--and back on our knees, totally dependent once again. I do this by exposing many of the sometimes humorous--and sometimes not so humorous--events in my own life as I progressed through the five stages.

Are there any authors that either influenced you personally or influenced your style of writing? Who are they and how did they influence you?

Brennan Manning, Henri J. M. Nouwen, and Max Lucado have to be right at the top of my favorite nonfiction authors list, simply because they call me back to the heart of worship, to a fresh appreciation of grace and a clarion call to rely totally upon God and not myself. I need those reminders on a regular basis. In addition, I love their writing styles. Their words "sing," and it is my goal to do the same with the words I write.

When you are not writing, what do you like to do? Do you have any hobbies?

Okay, now I have to 'fess up to how nearly one-dimensional I am. If I'm not writing, I'm...well, reading someone else's writing. That's at the top of my "what I like to do" list. However, I also spend time riding on the back of my husband's 2003 Harley Davidson Road King motorcycle. He's been riding HD's since 1970 and says he will never outgrow that youthful passion. On the road we are known as "Big Al" and "Easy Writer..."
